The
Surrey Pipe Band evolved from the previous 'Surrey Highland Bagpipe Club',
a group of pipers led by Roger Huth (previously a pipe major with the
Scots Guards). After
a visit to the club by Cecil McCready, who has known and worked with Roger
for many years and was then the lead drummer with the Irish Guards Pipes
and Drums, the idea of forming a band was first mentioned. This has
now developed into the present day formation of the Surrey Pipe Band.
The
Band is based in Woking, Surrey and meets at Courteney Free Church every
Monday and Wednesday evening between 7.30pm and 10.00 pm. At
present we have 27 playing members with a further 5 pupils learning either
the pipes or drums. The
band always aims to produce the highest quality of both sound and
performance whenever they are together on a parade, an engagement or
whilst playing at a practice. The achievement of this aim has placed
the band in great demand.

The
band wears the Royal Stuart tartan and is one of the few civilian bands
that still has a full dress uniform, which can be seen in the above picture.
Traditional
Scottish and Irish tunes are incorporated into various sets comprising
of marches, reels, jigs and other familiar tempos. Such a wide variety
creates a full colourful display of both movement and sound, which is
sure to stir the blood and set feet tapping.
